candidasa beach

Candidasa Beach

Everything you need to know about Candidasa Beach

Candidasa is located at Samuh Bugbug Village 12 kilometres from Amlapura, the main town of Karangasem. It was formerly known as Teluk Kehen (Kehen Bay), but since the tourism industry was introduced the name was changed to Candidasa.
Only one thing is for sure, Candidasa is a tranquil village offering varying accommodation, from basic to five-star resorts and few good restaurants in between.

Candidasa Beach Attractions

This small fishing village is nestled between the Lombok Strait to the east and the mountains to the west. It used to be the most popular destination with day-trippers in East Bali for its amazing white sandy beaches. But, since a while, tourists have decided to head up northwest to Amed for its tropical beachside life. Nevertheless, Candidasa still has some interesting things to offer.

 Goa Lawah Temple

The Bat Cave Temple of Goa Lawah is one of the most important in Bali. It is located approximately nine kilometres from Klungkung on the east coast of the island and was built in the 11th century. As its name suggests, the cave is the home of thousands of fruit bats that hang on the rock of the cave walls.
According to legend, the cave extends all the way to Pura Besakih (the Mother Temple) more than 30 kilometres away. On holy days, the beach in front of the temple transforms into a site for funeral rites for those who can afford it. Be careful not to disturb the sleeping bats if you step in and explore the cave.

Candidasa Beach Restaurants

In addition to the fine resorts and accommodations there are now several good restaurants lining the main street, all within easy walking distance. Take a wander along the street while deciding where to fill your appetite for tonight.
The Lotus Seaview restaurant is located at the very entrance to Candidasa. This open-air restaurant serves stunning seaside view and excellent International cuisine at good value price. Lotus Seaview serves best Balinese feast, fresh caught seafood fare and Italian specialties in Candidasa. Phone: 62 363 412 57.
Vincent’s is all about good food presentation, friendly service, fine music and a cosy atmosphere. This two-storey restaurant has a friendly and comfy ambience and a pleasant garden at the patio on the second floor where jazz softly plays.
TJ’s Café is situated next to the Water Garden Hotel and has a refreshing and relaxing atmosphere set around a shady tropical garden with 40 comfy seats. The dishes on offer are Mediterranean, European, Indonesian, Asian and California wraps. Phone: 62 36341540.
Of all the restaurants lining on the main street in Candidasa, Di Mahkota is the only restaurant that features do-it-yourself grilled food at your table. The restaurant caters lots of favourite dishes ranging from Indonesian to Western food. The place is also famous for its selection of breads, and a wide assortment of cheese and meats imported from the Netherlands. Phone: 62 363 418 00.

Candidasa Beach Nightlife

Do not expect to find any clubs or bars in Candidasa. This small village aims to be a peaceful getaway for travellers searching for a magnificent ocean view with hills and rice fields creating a graceful green backdrop. However, you can enjoy traditional Balinese dance performances every Tuesday and Friday evening at the Pandan Harum Dance stage.

Candidasa Beach Shopping

While visiting Candidasa, there is only one spot to head for, if shopping. There are several art shops lining the main street open daily from 09:00 to 21:00 and some may close earlier. You can find small souvenirs, handicrafts and art crafts made by locals from the neighboring village. No fixed price tags which mean you have to bargain for each item and pay in cash.

Candi Dasa and the attached areas have a wide selection of accommodation, from 50,000rp per night guests houses, such the Flamboyant in Senkidu, to 300,000rp per night for a modern place like Pondok Bambu in Candi Dasa, to the luxurious Amankila in Buitan, where rooms start at $847 per night.

tulamben bali

Tulamben is a small fishing village on the north-east coast of Bali. It is among the most popular dive sites on Bali since the wreck of the Liberty, a US Army Transport ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942 lies just off shore. During high-season, up to 100 divers descend to the wreck each day.

History
The town's name is derived from the word batulambih, which roughly translates as "many stones" a reference to the destructive eruptions by Mount Agung that have effected this part of Bali from time to time. The modern name evolved over time, first to "Batulamben" and finally settling on the contraction Tulamben ("batu" means "stone" in Indonesian).

The wreck

The wreck lies in shallow water and is considered appropriate for divers of all certification levels. The ship rests in 30 meters of water, is roughly 25 meters from shore and can be reached with a short swim from the beach. The highest point of the wreck tops out about 5 meters from the surface. The ship was torpedoed by the Japanese off the nearby Island of Lombok and the ship was towed to the beach at Tulamben for salvage operations. The 1963 eruption of Mt. Agung, which devastated much of the eastern side of Bali, drove the ship into the water just off shore, where it became encrusted with coral and a home to other sea life.

The best conditions for diving here are during October and November, when the weather is generally calm and during the start of southeast monsoon, which typically extends from May to July. In addition to a wide variety of corals and invertebrates on the wreck itself, large fish frequent the wreck in some seasons, most popularly Mola mola and whale sharks. Professional divers have praised local residents for minimizing local fishing activity.

Besides the diving this area is beautiful and aside from the area where the wreck is the beaches are secluded, empty and in their full natural glory. Most divers come up on day trips and so the feel is totally secluded although there are a few luxuries and mid range resorts here for those who wish to fulfill their dreams of a real tropical paradise. These resorts are ideal for couples and honeymooners due the beauty of the area, the relaxing culture and the secluded untroubled atmosphere that can be enjoyed with the luxuries of high class boutique resorts although due to the small number of such places if you wish to experience this, especially in the high season it is sensible to make a prior booking online to avoid disappointment.

There are plenty of Balinese and other Bali diving companies in this small area. The trip up here from the airport takes around 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic etc, but if you have an image of walking down the beach alone in a real tropical paradise then this is the place to find it and it's worth the journey. Candidasa is not far if you wish to benefit from their established tourism industry.
There are only few Bali Hotels in Tulamben but still provides comfortable accommodation during your holiday. Here are some Tulamben Hotels and Resort at discount rates.

pemuteran beach

Pemuteran is a small fishing village on the northern coast of West Bali.

This is a small laid-back village which has become increasingly popular with visitors in recent years. There are a number of waterfront resorts and its proximity to Lovina and West Bali National Park together with the extreme natural beauty of the area, has fuelled quite rapid growth in tourism infrastructure in the area.
Pemuteran is home to the largest artificial Biorock reef project in the world[1] and there is a real spirit of marine conservation effort in this area.

Visitors usually arive in Pemuteran on the north coast road from Lovina or Singaraja or from the west at Gilimanuk.
Regular bemos ply the north coast road but they are very slow and get extremely crowded.
You will have no problem renting a car with driver to take you from Lovina to Pemuteran - fix the price in advance and make sure petrol is included.
A direct ride to Pemuteran from tourist centres in the south will take about four hours depending on traffic on the coast roads.

Early morning dolphin watching boat trips can be arranged through any hotel. By no means guaranteed, but you have a decent chance of finding a pod here.
The beaches are escpeially nice in this area and consist of a particularly fine grained black sand.
Menjangan Island and West Bali National Park are easily reached from here. The Menjangan Island boats depart from Labuhan Lalang which is a 15 minute ride west from Pemuteran. Obligatory permits can be purchased from the national park office at the back of the Labuhan Lalang car park and you can also arrange a guide here. It is quite common for groups of visitors to congregate in this car park and join together to charter a boat. Most local hotels will make any arrangements you need for activities related to the national park.

Proyek Penyu  (turtle project) is a turtle breeding and release program run by one of the dive operators in co-operation with local villagers. Very much worth a visit and certainly worth your support.
The area around Pulaki village just east of Pemuteran is full of vineyards and is the centre of the grape growing industry in Bali.

Diving and snorkelling is excellent both here and at nearby Menjangan Island inside the West Bali National Park.

Pemuteran, situated to the west of Pulaki Temple, is an ideal place for natural excursion activities such as trekking, swimming, snorkelling, and diving. It is about 15 minutes driving from the West Bali National Park. The accommodation is ranging from small bungalow to 5-star hotels.

lovina beach

Lovina is a relatively new name coined in the 1950s by a local Buleleng Regency official with a good eye for future tourism-based development. It essentially consists of seven traditional villages, which all slightly merge into one on a ten kilometre stretch of the main road which hugs the north coast to the west of Singaraja: Temukus, Kalibukbuk, Anturan, Pemaron, Tukad Mungga, Banyualit and Kaliasem. Kalibukuk is the main hub of this area and is often thought of "Lovina town centre".
The whole stretch of coast here is fringed by quite narrow black sand beaches, which are accessed by a multitude of small lanes which run perpendicular to the east-west coast road. The beaches are generally safe for swimming, and the waters of Bali's north coast, in direct contrast to the crashing surf of the south, are relatively calm.
Diving, snorkelling and dolphin watching are the main activities, but perhaps above all else, this is an area in which to relax and take in a very slow, traditional pace of life. It can get a little crowded in July and August, but outside that peak season, this is a quiet part of the island.

Lovina’s black sand beaches are quite lovely and lend themselves well to exploration on foot at a leisurely pace. The sea is very calm here and is safe for swimming. The feeling on the beaches is one of laid-back tranquility with small, colourfully decorated traditional outriggers called perahu dotted along the shoreline. These are a reminder that you are in a traditional fishing community. There are a few hawkers, but nothing like as many as on the southern beaches, and this is as good a place as any in Bali to explore quiet beaches at your own pace. At the highest of tides the beaches can get a little difficult to traverse in places, so it is best to time your walks for a falling tide.
The small road that runs down to the beach-front from the main east-west coast route at Kalibukuk is called Jalan Bina Ria. At the beach end of this road is a rather wonderful dolphin statue. Apart from being a notable piece of kitsch, this is a reminder of the reason for the initial drive beind tourist development at Lovina (dolphins, obviously). Mini wooden and stone replicas of this statue are for sale widely in the area.
Brahma Vihara Arama
Brahma Vihara Arama
  • Brahma Vihara Arama, Dencarik. Bali's largest Buddhist monastery located near the village of Dencarik. The monastery is absolutely charming and commands lovely views. Whilst obviously Buddhist with its orange roof, numerous gold Buddhas and stupas recalling those at Borobudur, the carvings and ornamentation are very Balinese. The combination works well and if it were in a location easier to reach, this attraction would recieve far more visitors than it does. A visit here combines well with Banjar Hot Springs. Donation.
Your hotel can (and will offer repeatedly to) arrange day tours to the nearby sights including the beautiful highland scenery of Munduk to the south, the beaches of Pemuteran to the west, and the city of Singaraja to the east. All are within easy reach.

A dolphin trip at dawn at Lovina
A dolphin trip at dawn at Lovina
You will be offered dolphin sighting trips every other minute. These leave the main beaches each morning at dawn, and have mixed reviews as the boats tend to outnumber the dolphins. It can though still be an enjoyable ride, and if you do find a pod of dolphins it is of course very worthwhile. The price is fixed by the local boatmen's association, and is currently Rp 75,000 per person. If you are in a group, ask about chartering your own private boat.
Cockfights are popular around around Lovina, perhaps more so than anywhere else in Bali. This is taken very seriously, and you will see many older men training the cocks at the roadside throughout the area. At the fights, huge sums of money change hands as illegal gambling on the outcome is rife. If you are interested, ask at your hotel or approach one of the local men and ask to tag along to the next fight.
Banjar Hot Springs
Banjar Hot Springs
  • Banjar Hot Springs (Air Panas), Dencarik (about 10 km west by road to Dencarik, then an ojek ride on rough paths). 7AM-6PM. Located west of Lovina, this is an enchanting hot springs with stone carved mouths gushing water in a lush garden setting. The waters are naturally a very pleasing temperature and have a high sulphur content. The whole experience here is extremely therapeutic and cleansing. Changing rooms and lockers are provided on site. This is not a straightforward place to get to, and for that reason it is often way less crowded than you would expect for such a lovely spot. Rp 3,000

Diving

There are several dive operators based out of Lovina that operate daily dive and snorkeling trips to Menjangan Island, Tulamben and Amed, as well as dives from the local beaches. Be sensible and careful as some hotels and counters try to sell unlicensed diving trips that may look official on paper. Do not pay before you have seen the dive centre, and check that you will dive with certified divemasters/instructors.
  • Bali Spice Dive, +62 362 41305 (), [2]. PADI centre based in Lovina offering day trips to all of the dive spots on the northern coast of Bali. Guides are available in a variety of languages and multi-day discounts are available. Long-established and the largest dive operator in the area. Has a handy booking office in Jl Bina Ria, Kalibukuk, and the main centre is on the beach at Kaliasem close to the Aditya Beach Resort. US$55-75.  edit
  • Lovina Dive, Jalan Banyualit, Kalibukuk (just east of Kalibukuk), +62 812 3842415 (), [3]. PADI dive centre offering a full range of courses and fun dives to the major dive sites in north Bali. US$55-75.  edit
