"Hi Rio, George & I would like to thanks for everything you have done for us during our stay in Bali. You are really let us feel the warm & friendliness of Balinese. During those few days (29 Apr - 2 May'12) you always try to help us saved $$$. Like going in temple we need to wear sarong, you prepared for us in advance from home so we didn't need to rent. I believe most of other drivers just let their guest rent there, but you brought your & your wife's sarongs for us to wear. Beside this, the villa I stayed is not completely accessible by car, need to walk 5 -10 mins, day time ok, night time then scary as very dark; however you never failed to arrange & helped to make call to the villa arranging villa staff to drive buggy to fetch us. All this small gesture, make us feel touch. And really thanks for the birthday cake you gave to George on his birthday on 29 Apr. You are really the best Bali Tourism Driver, Well done Rio! Fantastic! ;

Hello Rio
Thank you for the photos of your family. This will help me remember my wonderful time and friends in Ubud.
There are 1400 people at this conference. The vice President of Indonesia is speaking to us this morning - much security here.
On the 29 we are taking several trips to see eco - developments. One of them is Hanging Gardens!! So you will see a big bus full of my colleagues on that day but I will go to another site.
Please give my regards to my new family, and I will write again very soon.

Hi Rio,
Congratulations again on the beautiful baby boy - - you are indeed a proud and wonderful father. We are at the airport in Massachusetts getting ready for a flight to Turkey to attend a 50th wedding anniversary of some very dear friends. We don't usually travel this much, but this year has been good. We recently e-mailed Jody to tell her again how much we enjoyed Bali - - especially the wonderful service you, Kadec, Gusti, and Rahdee provided.
Take care and treasure every minute you have with those precious children.

Hi rio! yesterday we were watching tv, a show called "no reservations" with tony bourdain.
he was in jakarta then bali and it made us want to go back all over again. we really miss bali and consider that trip to be one of our best vacations yet. All is well here in washington dc -- it's hot and humid, which is normal for this time of year in this area. Here are the pictures we promised you of when we visited your house -- i hope you know it was one of our most favorite memories from the trip.

Great to hear from you!

Hello Rio,

So good to hear from you. Your family is beautiful! We have shown many of our friends our pictures of Bali. They all want to come visit!

Joel and I spent a few days in Hong Kong after we left you. I've attached a few pictures. Hong Kong is VERY hot and humid--35 degrees every day. It makes you want to return to the cool breezes in Ubud!

It is summer here in the US. Where we live in the state of New Jersey it is warm but not hot. We've had many thunderstorms this week. But our garden is in full bloom and it's nice to sit outside to enjoy it.

Give our regards to Ady and your family.

Best,

Holly & Joel(New york/Usa)

Hi Rio,

Lovely to hear from you!

Of course we remember you and your family. You really made our trip to Bali special and we thank you for allowing us into your home - say hello to your
wife, daughter and parents from us.

We are now back in England and we feel very tired. It took us 24 hours from leaving Bali to arrive back at our house. The time in England is 8 hours behind you (I write this e-mail at 21.10 my time and 04.00 Bali time). We are finding it hard to live in England time.

Thank you for your pictures they are lovely. I have sent some pictures from our wedding for you. We loved Bali and we plan to come back in the next 2 years to remember our honeymoon. When we do we will contact you to collect us from the airport. We will also tell any friends going to Bali about you.

The season now is called autumn. We have 4 seasons in England - spring, summer, autumn and winter. Spring and summer are like your dry season and autumn and winter are your wet season so we are now in a wet season but we do not have as much rain as you just very cold weather.

Your English is very good - I am very impressed. We look forward to seeing you again soon,

Hi Rio,

We have now arrived safe back in the UK. When we got back to our (cold) appartment we immediately opened our picture from you - we are very delighted with it and we think that you are a very brilliant painter and also a very modest man for not showing us more of your talents when we were with you in Ubud area. We will send you a photo when we have had a chance to hang it on the wall. Thank you for the painting and for your guiding and friendship when were in Bali.

We also very much admire the painting of Elisa and her baby and will be happy to help you send it to Elisa and Colin. But for now I think we must sleep to recover from our long trip!

Hi Rio

Sorry it has taken so long to send these pictures to you. Work has been very busy for both Lyn and I this week as we have had to catch up on everything that happened while were were on holiday.

It was lovely to meet you and your family in Bali. We enjoyed the time we spent with you very much and your tours were very informative. Some of the trips we took were very long - so thank you for your patience. We were very impressed with your excellent and safe driving in the CRAZY Bali traffic! Of course we would recommend you to any of our friends who are visiting, and will pass your details on.

Please can you also show the picture of everyone at Villa Akasa Segara to Ketut, Komang and Putu as promised, and thank them very much on our behalf for the wonderful time we had there. They were all very kind to us and they made the stay memorable.

I hope everything is well with your wife and daughter, and we wish you all the best for the new baby. We would love to see a photo when the baby arrives.

Love and best wishes from Australia.

Hi Rio Always good to hear from you. Sorry to hear that there are less guests visiting. I think the riots in Malaysia might have deterred some visitors unfortunately. Your daughter is so adorable-cute picture. Not sure how you would promote in this area other than tieing your web-site into Canadian tourism sites. An idea although I am not that familiar with this subject area -is for you to introduce yourself by email to various Chamber of Commerce's in Canada. If you Google Vancouver, Burlington or Toronto Chamber of Commerce in Canada there may be a contact listed that you could approach to ask them how to promote your web-site. Certainly worth a try. Amazing to think you are going to have a new baby soon. Look forward to seeing the pictures.

Take care.

Selamat Pagi Rio Vegas Elvis,

We are home, safe and sound, after a 40 hour trip from Canggu to home. It was a LONG trip, without disco lights unfortunately. But, it is great to be home and in our own bed. Attached are a pic of the front of our home and the back yard. We got home Friday, the 9th and then my sister came to visit starting Saturday the 10th. We are having a good visit, especially since she went to visit a friend yesterday and stayed with them overnight (no, memitra).

We have had a very dry winter, and it hardly rained in California while we were in Bali. So, it decided to start raining on Monday and hasn't stopped !! What's up with that?? We need the rain, but I prefer sun. Perhaps we will come back to Bali next week for some sun ?!

Thanks for the pics of your ceremony. Your kids are SOOOOOO cute (and your wife is beautiful), it must be all the vegas lights and jean gati food that Kirni cooks. We still expect you to be FAT the next time we come to Bali.

Ujean ujean go away, come again another day. At least there is no tatit or grrrrooonng, just aqua minum from the gods.

Send our love to the family and keep on truckin!!

Balines Name

If you've been following this blog you probably realised there are a ton of people in Bali called Made ( Ma day ), Nyoman and Putu. There's a good reason for this. In Balinese culture if you are the first born ( male or female ) you will be called either Putu, Wayan or Nengah. Second born will be called Made or Kadek, third born Nyoman, Ika or Kamang, fourth born Ketut. If you are #5 you go back to 1.

I remember calling my friend Putu at the restaurant and chatting with someone for a couple of minutes, both agreeing it was nice to meet each other…..before realising it was a different Putu. I’m thinking of handing out # cards to any more Made’s I meet….we’re up to about 5 right now and when someone says ‘Made called for you’ I really don’t know who they’re talking about.

The advantage to this system is that if you forget someone’s name you have a shot at guessing it.

Balines Food

hot and spicy (pedas), as well as being peppery. Very often served cold, it reflects the village lifestyle, where people eat by themselves, when they are hungry, instead of a formal family meal. Coconut is central to Balinese cooking and religious ceremony. Coconut is grated and the meat (nyuh) is squeezed to produce a cream, which is added to many local dishes. Coconut oil is used to fry food.

Stopping at one of the thousands of roadside stalls in Bali you might try a plate of tipat cantok. This dish includes lontong, the compacted, rolled rice, cut into chunks, peanuts, lime juice, chilis, sprouts and other items, ground using a pestle and mortar.

In most villages the markets take place every 3 days. Sellers will have fruit, vegetables, beans, grain, you name it. Some of the fruits you will find on sale include, zirzak, salak, jeruk (pink are the best), nangka, blimbing (starfruit), durian, mangosteens, breadfruit, passion fruit (from Kintamani), white mangoes (wani). Of the vegetables you will find, that may not be common to westerners, are greens (kangkung), edible ferns (paku), acacia leaves (twi), tapioca leaves (ketela pohon),

Balines dance

General description

In Hinduism, dance is an accompaniment to the perpetual dissolving and reforming of the world. The creative and reproductive balance is often personified as Shiva's wife, Durga, sometimes called Uma, Parvati, or Kali. This has significance in Balinese Hinduism, since the common figure of Rangda is similar in many ways to Durga

Variants

In Bali there are various categories of dance[2], including epic performances such as the omnipresent Mahabharata[3] and Ramayana. Certain ceremonies at village temples feature a special performance of a dance-drama, a battle between the mythical characters Rangda, the witch representing evil, and Barong, the lion or dragon, representing good.

Among the dance traditions in Bali, the following deserve special mention:

  • Barong
  • Legong
  • Kecak
  • Technique

Bali dancers learn the craft as children from their mothers as young as age 10 (see a 11 years old dancer on the right). In Balinese dance the movement is closely associated with the rhythms produced by the gamelan, a musical ensemble specific to Java and Bali[4]. Multiple levels of articulations in the face, eyes, hands, arms, hips, and feet are coordinated to reflect layers of percussive sounds.

The number of codified hand positions and gestures, the mudras[5][6][7], is higher in India than in Java or Bali. It has been speculated that they have been forgotten as the dance was transmitted from India to Java[8]. Hand positions and gestures are nonetheless as important in Javanese and Balinese dance as in India[9]. Whether in India, Indonesia or Cambodia, hands have a typically ornamental role and emphasize the dance's delicate intricacy.

bali island

Bali is an Indonesian island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. It is one of the country's 33 provinces with the provincial capital at Denpasar towards the south of the island.

With a population recorded as 3,551,000 in 2009,[2] the island is home to the vast majority of Indonesia's small Hindu minority. About 93.2% of Bali's population adheres to Balinese Hinduism, while most of the remainder follow Islam. It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, metalworking, and music.
